Paper number three is a position paper, one that is persuasive and presents a logical argument that supports your thesis.
Pages: 5 – 7 page paper in the proper MLA format; you are showing me that you have learned all the bells and whistles of a properly formatted college paper
Essay Sources: You need to use a minimum of seven sources; you may have up to 12 in this paper. You MUST have at least four sources that are from college databases. Your Internet sources have to be credible, college-level sources as strong as any information that you might find on the databases. There should be no Wikipedia sources, ask.com. about.com etc. You are looking for solid academic research. You may use multi-media sources if they are appropriate for your topic: YouTube:DVDs etc.
Over use of a source: No source no matter how informative it may be, may be used more than three (total) times in your paper, nor more than two times in a row. As you know a solidly, grounded research paper should be a synthesis of sources pulled and culled together to support your thesis throughout the paper.
In-Text Sources: These are a mix of direct quotations, paraphrases and summaries from your sources that are properly set up with a lead in on first insertion of that source. You need to follow up each source, as you have been doing, with you own commentary, or as I call it – your two-cents.
This, in argument, is called a critical deduction. This is especially important in argument because you are making specific points taking the reader where you want them to go, ultimately trying to convince them to move over to your side of the issue.
You should have: a minimum of eight in-text sources going to a maximum of 12. I would like to see at least one direct quotation per page; how you do that is up to you.
Block Quotations (Optional): In this paper you may use a block quotation or two. However, remember they are not space fillers. If you choose a large quote it is because you need every word to make your point. If you use a block quote, the space it fills does not count towards your page count, so you need to write a longer paper. The blocks should not be longer than seven lines of text in this short paper.
Counter Argument: You need clear evidence (sources) that support the other side of your argument. As you have learned a counter-argument comes after you begin to make your own points supporting your side of the topic. The counter argument is not what you think the opposition says, but what they have written in articles.
Refutation and Turn-Back: After you give space to the other side of your argument (counter-argument), you need to refute it, in some way, and come back to your side of the topic.
Choose a topic about which you might be passionate. It is easy to argue a specific topic if you have a vested interest. You need not choose a subject that has global implications. I have had some great papers dealing with local issues that affected the student personally in some way.
General Comments
1. Remember you are using the sources to help support your ideas; they should not derail your efforts. Always remember to talk about the quote or paraphrase. The longer the quotation or paraphrase the more you need to talk about it. (Critical Deduction and Commentary)
2. Use only the part of the quotation that you need. Remember use the ellipsis … to remove words and [brackets] to add. (See the semester handouts). You can string quotations together with your commentary in-between the quotations.
3. If your quotation has more than four complete lines of text, it needs to be in block quotation form.
