Cuban Immigration to America 1960-present

In order to allow students to develop and/or extend their own interests,
students will also be asked to write a historical paper on one particular Caribbean group, focusing on a focused time
period (20-30 years would be ideal) and one aspect of that group’s experience during that time period. The paper
could consider ONE of the following topics: 1.) The impact of this group’s immigration on a particular city, 2.) How
the group has helped shape the U.S. economy, political system, social institutions or culture, 3.) Gendered
differences in the immigrant experience, 4.) The economic, educational, or other communal experiences of the
group, 5.) This group’s engagement with U.S. politics, 6.) The transnational ties of this group, or 7.) Aspects of U.S.
immigration policy which have impacted the group, among other possibilities.
Your paper should utilize at least ten outside sources, such as books, journal articles, archival research, etc. These
should include reputable sources obtained through the SFSU library, primary research you conduct (including
structured oral history interviews), etc. All sources must be properly cited both in-text (either parenthetical
citations or footnotes) and in a works cited page, using Chicago Style. Your paper MUST expand on a
thesis/argument developed through research, and be typed SINGLE-spaced, 10 pages, 12 point Times New Roman
font. The final paper is due on Fri., 12/20.
