ASSIGNMENT TASK
Barcelona’s controversial mayor Ada Colau pledged this week to reduce the number of tourists allowed into Barcelona by cutting cruise ships and limiting the expansion of its airport. It’s part of an ongoing battle against perceived overtourism and the balance between keeping communities financially alive without destroying their fabric. Barcelona is the self-styled capital city of the Mediterranean and a victim of its own success. As the Guardian reported in 2016, the number of visitors making overnight stays in the city increased from 1.7 million in 1990 to more than 8 million in 16 years. That’s an astonishing increase for a city that is not as big as other European equivalents, such as Paris or London, and where many of the major tourist sites such as Sagrada Familia and Parc Güell are in residential areas where space to expand simply doesn’t exist ( Barcelona Is Threatening To Shut Out Tourists, Alex Ledsom, Forbes.com downloaded 31/10/2019)
Using the principles of concept development, you are asked to give an 8-minute pitch (short- presentation) proposing an innovative concept which could tackle the problem of overtourism in Barcelona . In order to do this you need to choose from one of the three key stakeholders; either Local Residents, foreign tourists; or Barcelona Tourist Board and design a innovation which will alleviate this current crisis.
Your innovation could for example be one of the following:
• a new type of product/service process;
• a new ‘branded’ product / service concept;
• an innovative proposal for improving or redesigning service delivery;
• a technological enhancement leading to improved quality of the customer experience.
In addition, you are required to submit a flowchart will highlight the process undertaken to develop your idea. You are also required to submit a one-page reference section which will include relevant theoretical models and underpinning contemporary research consulted as part of the development of your idea.
The Elevator Pitch can be in any format but you may wish to consider the following options:
• PowerPoint or Prezi presentation: maximum of FOUR slides.
• ONE page ‘flyer’ format. A4 templates are available on Microsoft Publisher.
• Any other presentation format of your choice.
• You are expected to submit one copy of your slides and flowchart to the assessor at the beginning of YOUR pitch.
