Lecturing has been proven many times over as an ineffective way of teaching, and the article “Identifying Effective and Successful Teaching Strategies Using PERIA Model” by Zepalka et al. backs this up. In their article, the authors endorse the PERIA model as a better means of student learning and mastery. In this essay, imagine you are a new teacher in the field, and you want to get other teachers on board with the PERIA model. You have been tasked with writing a 4-6 page paper which does the following:
1) Explains what the PERIA model actually means (don’t just throw in a ton of quotations –explain this in your own words) and why teachers have turned to it. Use information from the article and cite it to support your argument.
2) Offer an example lesson like the ones in the article to demonstrate how PERIA works for the age group/lesson you are teaching, and explain how each of the steps you are doing fulfils the intentions of the model. (You do not need to put as much information in as the authors as your essay is much shorter than theirs.)
3) Conclude your essay by restating what PERIA is, why it is so important, and how lessons like yours will help students learn. Then, offer some final, closing thought that wraps your essay up nicely
A NOTE ON QUOTATIONS: Many students come to college thinking that using a lot of quotations makes their paper good. It doesn’t. You should use quotations VERY sparingly, opting for paraphrasing the majority of the time. Your quotations must also be relevant to your point with contextualization and explanation surrounding them. Anyone can stick a quotation in an essay; the skill lies in picking the right quotation and not making the quotation do all of the work for you. Consult the materials I’ve provided in the “Quotation Materials” folder in the course files page for additional information on how to do this.
Formatting:
Length: 4-6 pages, double-spaced with 1-inch margins. 3 ½ pages is not 4 pages.
Font: Any 11 or 12 point font that is standard and professional is acceptable (no bubble fonts, please)
Layout: Your essay must be presented as you see on the link below. Points will be deducted if it isn’t.
Due Date: See syllabus for rough draft and final draft due dates.
Your essay must be in MLA formatting. I will not accept essays that have not been formatted properly. This link will take you to a video tutorial that will show you step by step how to do this. The video is less than three minutes long, so there is no excuse for not following this standard.
