In an interesting promotion for the movie Ex Machina (2015), users of online dating apps interacted with a “person” that had the personality and looks of one of the main characters (an attractive robot played by Alicia Vikander) and was operated by a chatbot (a computer program made to simulate a real person in online conversations). Many people thought they were talking with a real person, which says both something about the quality of the chatbot and how people behave in online dating apps. In a way, this faked person passed a version of the Turing test. Make use of this situation in answering the following questions: If a computer program (or robot) can reliably pass the Turing test, would this mean that it is intelligent?
– My answer is no, therefore the paper should answer: Why not? How is this computer program different than humans and why does that mean it’s not intelligent? Could a computer ever be intelligent? Why or why not?
– Use any ideas at least 1 from lesson following in thinking:
The Prisoner’s Dilemma,
Leopold and Loeb (Darrow’s closing arguments at their trial),
Plato, “The Myth of Gyges”, What makes something good?; Justice.
J S Mill on Utilitarianism
Kant’s Categorical Imperative
Nietzsche’s critique of morality
+ Instruction
*** Important requirement of this assignment: Create a clear thesis in your paper and make clear, reasoned arguments supporting your thesis. Try to keep your thoughts on point and just say what needs to be said – don’t add “fluff” unless it helps get your point across. While you will state your opinions, you must be sure to back them up with arguments. An argument is NOT simply stating something – you must say WHY it supports what you say it does.
You do NOT need to restate the prompt. Dive straight into the problem (I suggest you start by identifying the key issues in the situation). Seriously, don’t waste space with a lengthy introduction. I know what the prompt says since I wrote it – only repeat the details of it if they’re necessary, but avoid summaries.
