In a seven to nine page typed, double-spaced term paper, you are to choose from one of the two choices offered below. Your finished paper must be well cited within the paper as well as including a bibliography or works cited page at the end. I expect to see at least five credible outside sources used in support of your discussion. Note, primary sources include: original documents, diaries, court transcripts, census or other original statistical information, speeches, song lyrics, wills, legislative acts etc. Secondary sources include: books, magazines, newspaper articles, published internet work, articles from professional journals, government reports, etc. Your title page, or page one if using MLA, must list the course title, section time, date and your name. The paper is due no later than the fourteenth week of instruction.
1. Choose THREE of the people, or groups, in Eric Foner’s Voices of Freedom reader and fully develop them analytically. I DO NOT want three separate biographies but a paper that compares and contrasts the individual selections in a flowing narrative that focuses on the idea of freedom. How did each interpret the concept of American freedom? What contributions did they make to their times? What challenges did they face? How did they see the idea of freedom extended to others? Besides the Voices reader and the textbook an additional five outside sources are required. NOTE: encyclopedias are not credible sources for citation in a research paper.
2. In a room where time has been suspended, SIX of the people in the Voices of Freedom reader have gathered to speak with each other about freedom. Though they lived at different times and their life experiences varied greatly they all held strong ideas about the meaning of the elusive concept. A debate begins as the individuals exchange views about the definition, the meaning and the value of American freedom. Your essay should fully develop their stands and conclude by summing up what was learned about freedom from their mythical roundtable. As above, five outside sources are required.
