- GENERAL DIRECTIONS TO WRITE THIS LAB REPORT
• Lab reports must be typed and double-spaced. Otherwise, they will be returned to
the student ungraded and you will have a zero in this assignment.
• Divide the report into FOUR sections named as Introduction, Results, Discussion and
Additional Questions (no Methods section this time). Use these terms as headings to
identify each section.
• Although you did the experiment per group and, thus, all the members of the group
obtained the same results, each student must write his or her own Lab Report (see
“plagiarism”, in the syllabus). If two lab reports are identical or too similar, both
students will a zero (0) in this assignment.
DIRECTIONS TO WRITE EACH SECTION OF THE LAB REPORT
A) HOW TO WRITE A TITLE FOR YOUR LAB REPORT
– Lab Reports like scientific publications, should have a Title.
– The title should be only ONE sentence that includes the supported hypothesis or
your general conclusion from this experiment.
– Titles such as “Lab Report on Salt” or “Boiling Point Experiment” are unacceptable
because are incomplete and does not include your findings.
B) HOW TO WRITE THE “INTRODUCTION” SECTION
The Introduction informs the reader WHY you made the study.
Write the following information in this order:
– Your initial – The question that the initial observation generated: What observation or question
stimulated you to perform these experiments? What background information
relates to the question?
– A clear, explanatory hypothesis that you tested (an educated guess based on
your previous knowledge on the subject)

HOW TO WRITE THE “RESULTS” SECTION
In the Results section, you tell the reader what did you find (measure, count) with
your experiment. Present your data clearly, sometimes summarized in a table. Keep
in mind that too much detail is generally unnecessary and might swamp the reader.
General instructions to write the RESULTS section:
– Write this section in Past Tense and First Person Singular
– Limit to the facts and avoid interpretations
What you SHOULD NOT include in the RESULTS section:
– A paragraph that list ALL the results obtaine
– A paragraph with a description of the procedure or methods used in the
experiment
– Your hypothesis and predictions of the results
– Any analysis of the results obtained
– Do NOT restate the Hypothesis
– Do NOT describe Methods
What you SHOULD include in the RESULTS section:
1. SUMMARY OF THE RESULTS in only ONE sentence.
