Instructions
The “Notes & Queries” assignment has several purposes:
To improve your fluency (ease and speed) with writing
To develop skills in close reading and critical thinking
To give you practice with formal academic writing
Each “Notes & Queries” is a *thesis-driven interpretation/analysis* of a single literary work (The Iliad), not a reflection or response piece. It is based on your own ideas and words and requires careful reading and thought. A well written “Notes & Queries” will state and defend an arguable thesis using well chosen, correctly presented quotations and clear, correct, convincing writing. Because of its length it will be only a preliminary exploration of its topic and should have a narrow, carefully defined focus. *Quote from the literary work that is your subject and from at least one scholarly, peer-reviewed secondary source*.
