Preparation
First, make a good first impression that shows me you read these instructions. Use Microsoft Word and save your essay and outline in a single document as a .docx file (MS Word default file format) using this file name format:
Lastname Firstname ENGL1301 Narrative Essay.docx
Submitting your essay in the Microsoft Word file format ensures I will be able to open and read your document. Do not simply rename a file prepared with a different word processor with a .docx extension–a non-MS Word file will not be processed by Blackboard and SafeAssign. If you cannot preview your essay after uploading it, then neither can I see or grade it. By turning in a MS Word document file, you will be able to readily see my comments in your document when I grade and return it to you. Do not email your essays to me. I cannot accept assignments that are emailed to me because I cannot gain access to your student account and file materials in your name without your logon credentials. Do not share your logon credentials with anyone.
Second, use the Modern Language Association (MLA) format style to make your paper look like the example at this link: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_formatting_and_style_guide/mla_sample_paper.html.
Third, you must include an outline of your essay in the same .doc or .docx file as your essay. Use the MLA formal outline format to structure your outline; for examples of the MLA formal outline format (alphanumeric outline), you should visit the Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) at https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/general_writing/the_writing_process/developing_an_outline/types_of_outlines.html. I suggest that you place your outline on a new page after the last page of essay text in your document.
Each of these three housekeeping tasks are worth five percent of this assignment grade for a total of fifteen percent. The quality of your outline is graded separately. Your assignment is incomplete without both an essay and an outline.
Narrative Essay
Write a 500 to 750 word essay using narration as the chief method of development. Make sure that you have viewed the MLA Sample page for formatting purposes. Also, please visit the Writing Lab found on the Course Menu for an example of a narrative essay.
Writing Assignment
Purpose: to inform
Method of Development: narration
Choose your own topic, but make sure that the topic allows you to be able to narrate it. Quite often a narrative is written in first person point of view. You want your narrative to have a point as well. Was there a conflict among individuals? Are you narrating a story about a day spent with a two year old child? You can choose to tell a story about a place you went to, your first day at a new job, or an event that may have changed your perception of a person. If you have something in mind but you are unsure if it will work as a narrative essay, please send me a message through the Messages link for assistance. (Caution: all writing must be your own original work written for this class; you cannot use previously written material even if done for an earlier ENGL1301 or other college class). Include a formal outline (alphanumberic outline) for the essay in the same file as the essay.
