my class is CMST 2: Introduction to Rhetorical Criticism
Analysis Paper #1
Step-by-Step Paper Guidelines
1. Your analysis paper should have an introduction to the paper by detailing what the readers will gain from your analysis. (½ page) You might consider writing the introduction after completing the criticism.
2. Choose an artifact.
A. The first step is to choose an artifact. The artifact can be any rhetorical message such as a speech, text, film, or video clip. The artifact must be archived and public. This means I should be able to easily locate and view/listen to the artifact.
B. First, introduce the artifact. What is it? Who is in it? What is the purpose? (½ page)
Second, describe the importance of the artifact. Why is this artifact worth writing about? What is the significance? (½-1 page)
C. Please attach or include a way for me to access the artifact. This might be a link or a body of text. This should be in a separate document OR it can be pasted in the comment section of your Canvas submission.
3. Choose a rhetorical criticism method.
The second step is to choose an appropriate rhetorical criticism method from our textbook. For the first analysis paper, I ask all students to use the traditional perspective. For the second analysis paper, you can use any method that we have covered: traditional perspective, narrative criticism, dramatism/pentadic criticism, or fantasy theme criticism.
A. Introduce the rhetorical criticism method. Think of this section as a brief overview of the method so that I can assess your understanding and use of it. You will use the textbook and lectures for this section.(1-2 pages). In your description of the method, you should address the purpose of the method and the reasons why the method is effective.
B. No additional outside sources are necessary for this section, unless desired.
4. Complete the rhetorical criticism.
The final and most important step in your paper is the rhetorical criticism. This is your analysis of the artifact using your chosen rhetorical criticism method. Since each method will vary in its analysis, the instructions here are more general. Please refer to lesson and textbook material as well as our wiki pages to ensure you are completing this step fully.
A. Complete an analysis of your artifact using your chosen method. There should be specific points of analysis rather than a holistic or more general analysis. For example, if using ideographic criticism, you should pull in the importance of power and discourse in the artifact. (2-3 pages)
I.. Use at least two different outside sources to support your analysis in some fashion. This will depend on the method you are using. For example, traditional critics are concerned with the effects on the audience. If analyzing a Barak Obama speech, locate an article about the speech that describes its effectiveness.
B. After your analysis, write a short conclusion to your paper. This should summarize your artifact and the meaningful information you derived from your analysis. (½ page)
5.APA formatting. Your paper should have a cover page and references page. Keep in mind that your references will include the textbook and your artifact. No abstract required.
Total Page Length: 4 ½ – 7 pages*
Explaining all these instructions! see this link its video
also I have included one student sample paper reference. I picked this student paper because the student used proper APA formatting and followed the instructions very well. However, each writer is different and so please do not try to copy the writing style exactly. Be your own writer but stick to the instructions!
You should complete your assignment following APA guidelines. Please use the 6th edition of APA. Please check out our APA page for more resources: APA Resources
(Links to an external site.) I specifically look for:
One inch margins.
12 point size font in Times New Roman.
College level writing. Three (3) points of your analysis paper includes writing quality, which includes appropriate grammar, spelling, and APA format. I especially look for paragraph structure, transitions, and overall flow.
Clearly labeled sections and headers.
APA format for all in-text citations.
Title your file as follows: LastName_FirstName_AnalysisPaper1
