A complete review of writing style is beyond the scope of these guidelines, but the ACS style guide chapter on Writing style offers excellent guidance. It may be found at https://pubs.acs.org/doi/pdf/10.1021/bk-2006-STYG.ch004
Detailed guidelines for grammar, spelling, and language may be found in this chapter of the ACS https://pubs.acs.org/doi/pdf/10.1021/bk-2006-STYG.ch009
Figure style
All figures should
1. Be sequentially numbered throughout the report
2. Have a full numbered caption beneath the figure briefly describing it 3. Avoid including illegible text
Plots in figures should
1. Have all axes labeled with correct units
2. Include a legend when multiple results are presented in one plot
3. Include uncertainties (“error bars”) where appropriate and available
4. Generally be presented as scatter plots superimposed with a trend line from a linear or
nonlinear regression (Plots may include connecting lines between points if no calculated
trendline is available)
The ACS style guide for figures is found at https://pubs.acs.org/doi/pdf/10.1021/bk-2006-STYG.ch015
Number and equation style
1. An equation editor should be used for equations when available (and can also be used for in-line symbols in the text)
2. Equations should be numbered sequentially throughout the report.
3. Equations should be center-justified on a separate line with the number in parentheses or
brackets at the right margin
4. Numbers (quantities) in the text, as well as those in tables and figures, should be given with the
correct number of significant figures
5. Numbers representing measurements or calculations from measurements should include the
uncertainties (errors or propagated errors) where possible
Reference style
Students are encouraged to use a citation manager such as EndNote or RefWorks, which can automatically insert citations in your text and format them in a reference list according to pre-specified standards. Software is available either on the web or through myNEU, and the library provides a comprehensive introduction to the citation manger options and instructional material at http://subjectguides.lib.neu.edu/Citations. The Library is constantly running workshops and webinars on using such software (see the calendar at https://northeastern.libcal.com/ )
The convention to be used for reports in this laboratory is the format for the Journal of the American Chemical Society. If a citation manager is not used, the following general rules apply.
Citations
1. Citations in the text are made by consecutive superscript numbers, which appear outside the punctuation if the citation applies to a whole sentence or clause
2. If a reference is repeated, the original reference number is used..
3. When citing more than one reference at one place, the numbers are listed in ascending order
separated by commas; a consecutive series of three or more is indicated with the range
separated by an en dash.
4. Author names may appear in the text with the citation. If a reference has two authors both
names joined by the word “and” are given; for more than two authors, only the first name listed is given, followed by “et al.”
Reference list
1. References are listed in a section at the end of the report in the order of appearance.
2. Periodical and journal references must include the author names, abbreviated journal title, year
of publication, volume number (if any), and initial page of cited article (the complete span is
better).
3. Book references must include the author or editor names, book title, publisher, city of
publication, and year of publication.
4. References to laboratory assignment documents should follow the general format used for
technical reports, including authors, title, source (e.g. department) and date of publication.
5. Web references should include the title of the web page, the URL, and the date the page was
accessed.
6. For material other than books and journals, sufficient information must be provided so that the
source can be identified and located. A complete guide to styles for a wide range of sources may be found in Table 14-2 of the ACS guide at the following link:
