Now that you have selected your problem, the next step in the process is to find out what others have already said about the issue. Creating a paper that summarizes what the current literature says is called a Literature Review. In a normal scientific paper you would be reading until you found the end of our shared knowledge (these typically go on for about 10 pages and include upwards of 30-50 citations). For this paper, however, I would like you to find at least 5 sources (more if you can). These sources should be scholarly in nature. Try to avoid brief articles or web pages. Instead, look for quality, reliable resources that will stand up to scrutiny and include a clear author.
Once you have found your sources, try to put them in some sort of logical order. Perhaps chronological is the best way to present them. You might also think about it in terms of the variables you will be assessing. There may be other methods for organization. Regardless, you need to present them in a logical order. Then, start with a summary paragraph that explains your logical order (Think about it as a preview for the upcoming content). The next chunk of the paper will be a paragraph dedicated to each article using the following structure:
TOPIC SENTENCE: The first sentence is a summary of the entire paragraph – think about it like a thesis statement. What is this paragraph going to prove?
SUMMARIZE THE ARTICLE: Your second (and potentially third) sentence(s) will be a brief summary of what the article says. What method was used and what conclusions were drawn?
ANALYZE AND SYNTHESIZE THE ARTICLE: Spend 2-4 sentences using your own words to connect what was found in the article with the questions you have been asking and the work you plan to do. How does this work relate to your current research project?
TRANSITION TO THE NEXT ARTICLE: Your final sentence should create a smooth transition from the end of this paragraph to the beginning of the next. It should be clear why these paragraphs are next to each other.
This will be the longest chunk of your research paper and should clock in around 3-5 pages (double-spaced). If you are having trouble hitting the 3 or even 4 page mark, you should start to think about where you can “unpack” ideas. You might also look for more articles. This part of the paper is where you make the case that your research is important and is an extension of present work in the field.
Your literature review should conclude with a hypothesis. That means you should end by making some assertion of a predicted relationship between variables. For example, you could say, “If I explain my choices more clearly, my mother will be more permissive of my behaviors.” In this instance, the independent variable (the one you can control) is explaining your choices more clearly while the dependent variable (the one that depends upon the variable you can control) is your mother’s permission. Your hypothesis must be supported by evidence presented in this literature review. Ideally, your hypothesis is the natural conclusion of all you have presented in this paper.
I will upload my previous part of my paper so you can match articles that closely relate to my current friendship/relationship. This part of my project will go right underneath my uploaded part of the project. just so you can get an overall look at how it should be.
