To assume the role of a parent of a child with ASD then reflect on what needs to be considered when selecting a service provider.
This assignment relates to the following Course Learning Requirements:

CLR 1: Use appropriate interpersonal skills and problem solving techniques in working with children, families, clinical teams and service providers
CLR 4: Communicate limitations of their expertise, role, or responsibility to families and service providers and refer to supervisors as appropriate (CLO 29)
CLR 5: Communicate effectively with clinical supervisors and service providers about the need for services for families of individuals with ASD
Instructions:
Pretend that you are the parent of a 3 year-old boy who was just diagnosed with ASD. After considering your options, you have decided to enroll your son in IBI. You have researched the services that are available in your area and have narrowed down your options to 2 different IBI providers. You now have the opportunity to meet with each of these service providers. Describe the qualities that you will look for in each, the factors that you will consider and how you will decide which service provider to pursue services from. Consider what your goals and limitations (i.e. time, logistics, financial etc.) may be as a parent.

Expectations:

Each student is responsible for carefully reading all assigned material and being prepared for each discussion. The majority of readings are usually from the course text but additional readings may be assigned by the facilitator from supplementary resources.

Evaluation of a graded discussion forum post is based on contribution to discussions.

Grading for discussions is based on your interaction (i.e., responding to classmate postings with thoughtful responses) and your critical thinking. Just posting your response to a discussion question prompt is not sufficient; you want to conscientiously interact with your classmates. Be as detailed as possible in your postings and in your responses to your classmates’ postings. Feel free to agree or disagree with your classmates but always make sure that your postings are civil and constructive.
