Most of the novel’s first half takes place at the Madame Lebrun’s seaside resort on Grand Isle, with a day trip to the fishing community of the Chenière Caminada. Most of the guests (as well as Madame Lebrun and her sons) do little but interact socially with each other, so we get a good look at what this society is like—how the men behave with the women, how the women behave toward each other, how they interact with their servants, all of whom are people of color. (Notice, by the way, how many of the servants are identified as racially mixed—we encounter terms such as “mulatto,” “quadroon,” “mulatresse,” and more.) We also get an idea of Creole society’s relationship with the arts—there are discussions of painting and music, and novels are read (notice how shocked Edna is by the novel that is being passed around among the guests).
Write about some element of this society, describing it and giving examples from the text. Discuss how this affects people’s behavior and expectations. Make your post as interesting and thoughtful as possible. It should be at least 300 words long. and frame the quotations
