literature analysis

Read two different translations of the same short passage side by side, developing an analysis of the two versions. Make a clear argument as to which translation you find more effective and justify this claim through your close reading and analysis.

Your should quote both translators’ versions of the passage.
Use the close reading skills you’ve developed and practiced to analyze both versions.
Your thesis would answer: which translator’s version do you prefer and why?
Your essay should show: How does that translator’s version deepen your understanding/appreciation of the text?
To differentiate between different translations when you’re citing them or simply mentioning them, use the translators’ names. For example, “The Carson translation of The Death of Ivan Ilyich does X, whereas the Dreiblatt translation does Y.”
If you refer to “the original,” that means the original text written by the author in his or her original language, e.g. Tolstoy’s original Russian. Neither translation can be referred to as “the original.”
Remember, each translator is working from the same original text, taking it from its original language (French, German, Galician, Russian, or Chinese) into English. It’s not an exact science, and different translators have different priorities and goals. The one you choose as best is a matter of personal preference — but argue for why you think your favorite is best and back that up with your own close reading and analysis.
