Much of the work in queer theory and queer psychology has been critical, meaning that it critiques assumptions people, including researchers, may make about gender, sexuality, and other social identities. Throughout this course, we will be looking at empirical research—some with more of an explicitly queer perspective and some from a more mainstream LGBT psychology perspective. Your task for this assignment is to identify one empirical article related to the psychological study of gender and/or sexuality. It may behoove you to pick a topic related to your final project, but you do not need to do so. In this 5-page paper, you will describe the research question, study design, and major findings of the article. You will then discuss how the article relates to queer theory. This will involve connecting the theoretical foundations we discuss to the assumptions and concepts in the article. Does the article incorporate queer concepts like heteronormativity, performativity, or intersectionality? Do the authors treat gender and sexuality in an essentialist or socially constructed manner? If it incorporates queer theory, how does this contribute to the article’s framing and argument? If it does not, how would bringing a queer theoretical perspective improve or change this research? Finally, conclude with how the article’s findings could contribute to social justice aims.
