Develop organized essays to respond to the following two questions(i) What does it mean to study the “intersections” of race and racism? With reference to assigned readings and lecture material, discuss race and class OR race and gender intersections, and some of the ways that we see such intersections taking shape in popular culture. How might a focus on intersections help us think about the relationships between “structure” and “representation”?
(ii) Drawing on course lectures, assigned readings, and assigned media, discuss how the ideas of hegemony and counter-hegemony relate to the study of race/racism in popular culture. What does the idea of hegemony tell us about how racism is reflected in popular culture? What might it mean to also think of popular culture as a site of “cultural struggle”, as the scholar Stuart Hall once suggested, and what kinds of counter- hegemonic expressions might we find in popular culture? Make use of specific examples in your responses.Exam essays should be typed, double-spaced, 1-inch margins, and at a maximum 12- point font size, with a bibliography/references page. Exams should make reference to specified/relevant assigned readings and these must be properly and accurately cited.
