Conduct an assessment of a charity’s effectiveness using material from Singer’s book. Your assessment should include a few crucial elements: an explanation of the criteria you will use to determine the organization’s effectiveness (consider referring to chapters 1, 11, 12, and 14 in Singer); an analysis of any relevant information the charity makes publicly available on its web site; and a final recommendation regarding whether effective altruists should or should not support the charity. As part of your assessment, you must also conduct an interview with a representative of that charity and integrate material from that interview (including direct quotes) into your assessment. Note that you may not pick a charity already assessed by GiveWell or another major meta-charity—though you are encouraged to consult their sites for model assessments. (You might begin with GiveWell’s analysis [and recommendation] of Helen Keller International’s Vitamin A Supplementation Program: https://www.givewell.org/charities/helen-keller-international#Does_it_work.)
The best papers will be logically organized and effectively supported. (Include a correct works cited page, and format your paper in either MLA or Chicago style.) They will smoothly integrate and fully explain material from primary and secondary sources. They will feature coherent transitions that usher the reader between ideas and paragraphs. Last, and most importantly, they will be concisely and cleanly written; they will be carefully proofread and have few if any grammar, punctuation, or spelling errors.
The essay (excluding headers, footers, notes, and works cited) should be between 1250 and 1500 words long. There are two possible submission deadlines: if you would like comments on your essay, post an electronic copy to Blackboard and the HU 202 tab on your ePortfolio by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18. If you don’t want comments or need more time to write, upload your essay to the same places by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25. (Papers will be marked late only if they are submitted after March 25.) Please print out and save your Turnitin submission receipt when you upload your essay.
The interview is required! The book access is here https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/BU/detail.action?docID=3421594
