STA 1021 – Introduction to StatisticsSpring 2020Final ProjectFor your final project, working alone or in pairs, you will develop your own research question about a relevant social science topic, to be addressed with statistical analysis of social science data. You will then perform the necessary analysis and write up the results answering your research question. I expect that you will use data from the GSS to answer your question. You are welcome to use data either from the simplified data set we’ve been using in class, or the full GSS data set also posted on Canvas. (Depending on your question, you might want to use a data set other than the GSS, but please check with me first about this.)The analysis should employ the methods we’ve been learning in class. This should definitely include basic descriptive and inferential statistics and will probably mean some form of multiple regression model; you don’t need to use this kind of model in your final analysis, but if you don’t you need to explain why. Be sure to present and discuss both effect sizes and significance test results for all statistical estimates. Be sure also to present your results using appropriate tables and figures, which should be included and labeled within your paper. In addition to presenting your own results, the final research paper should include a discussion of findings from at least two or three relevant social science research articles that address a similar topic or question. In your paper, you should use this research to frame your own, and describe and compare their findings to your own findings. The final paper should be approximately 2500 to 3500 words, double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman font with 1-inch page margins and ¼- or ½-inch indentations. Proper formatting and appropriate language are also part of the grade. (It probably makes sense to format this like a standard social science research paper: introduction, background / literature review, data / variables, methods, analysis, results, conclusion.) In addition to your paper, you will give an in-class presentation (10 minutes maximum) of your projec. You are expected to present your research question, and demonstrate how you applied your statistical skills to analyze the question. The in-class presentations will not be graded, but they are a good opportunity to practice how to present your own research!
