Respond to the following questions based on your reading and viewing. Your response should be written in analytical prose using citation references from the video and readings as well as your personal language experience.
What is the contextualized vocabulary instruction? How is the contextualized vocabulary instruction similar or different from concept-based vocabulary instruction (give two similarities and two differences)?
In chapter 4 (Dong, 2011), Dong illustrated quite a few contextualized vocabulary teaching strategies with examples of the end products. They were the Keyword method (pp. 59-62), TPR (pp. 63-64), word structure (pp. 73-76), word collocation and connotation (pp. 64-73), multiple meanings of a word across disciplines (pp. 81-83), etc. Select one complex and abstract word in your discipline and design one vocabulary learning activity using one of those contextualized vocabulary teaching strategies discussed in the chapter.
Search online and select two useful online sources/websites about teaching academic vocabulary to ELLs. Find the source/website that is appropriate for your teaching certification levels, such as 7-12 or K-12. Also, find the source/website that is related to your subject matter, such as physical education, art education, music education, science education, mathematics education, and ELA education. Finally, the source/website you gathered must be intended for the ELLs. Do the following:
1. Give proper citation by listing the website title and exact website address. For example,
Math vocabulary instruction for ELLs. Retrieved from
https://www.colorincolorado.org/teaching-ells/content-instruction-ells/math-instruction-ells
2. Under each of your source citations, use your own words (do not cut and paste directly from the site) to write a paragraph or two to summarize what it is all about, who designs it, and what is this source intended to teach, and why you selected this site.
3. Give two examples from the site to illustrate language focuses that the source highlights the effective teaching strategies related to ESL vocabulary instruction.
