Please write a 1500-2000 word response to the questions below. Make sure to write answers to all the parts of the assignment (A1, A2, A3, A4, B1, B2, & B3). Your answers should be grammatically correct, clear, and complete. It is essential that you demonstrate an accurate understanding of Montesquieu’s political philosophy and that your claims about the text are well-supported with cited textual evidence (including page numbers) from The Spirit of the Laws.
A. The “Nature” of Your Family:
Given how Montesquieu understands the “nature of a government,” does the nature of your family most resemble a democratic republic, an aristocratic republic, a monarchy, or a despotism? Your answer should include the following:
A1) You should explain in detail the nature of the government which you believe most closely resembles the political structure of your family. You should make at least three references to Montesquieu’s The Spirit of the Laws Book II (in the form of either paraphrases or quotations which cite the text, including page number) to support your general explanation of the type of government you chose (either a democratic republic, aristocratic republic, monarchy or despotism).
A2) You should briefly introduce the members of your family (how you define “your family” is up to you), explaining the role and power of each within the family. Try to be clear, as the instructor does not know your family.
A3) You should discuss one rule or situation, which you believe reveals the nature of your family. Try to be as detailed and clear as possible, as the instructor does not know about your family’s rules or what happened in the situation you chose.
A4) You should defend the claim that your family most resembles the type of government that you chose (democratic republic, aristocratic republic, monarchy, or despotism) by referring both to Montesquieu’s account of the nature of the type of government you chose in A1 and the rule

or situation that you discussed in A3. Assume that your reasoning is not obvious to the instructor and argue for your position as fully and clearly as possible.
B. The “Principle” of Your Family:
Given how Montesquieu understands the “principle of a government,” does the principle of your family most resemble virtue in the spirit of equality, virtue in the spirit of moderation, honor or fear? Your answer should include the following:
B1) You should explain in detail the principle of the government which you believe most closely governs the behavior of the members of your family. You should make at least three references to Montesquieu’s The Spirit of the Laws Book III and V (in the form of either paraphrases or quotations which cite the text) to support your general explanation of principle that you chose (either virtue in the spirit of equality, virtue in the spirit of moderation, honor or fear).
B2) You should discuss one situation, which you believe reveals the principle of your family. Try to be as detailed and clear as possible, as the instructor does not know about the situation you chose.
B3) You should defend the claim that your family is governed by the principle that you chose (virtue in the spirit of equality, virtue in the spirit of moderation, honor or fear) by referring both to Montesquieu’s account of the principle of the type of government you chose in B1 and the specific example that you discussed in B2. Assume that your reasoning is not obvious to the instructor and argue for your position as fully and clearly as possible.
