A book review is NOT a book report, but a scholar’s approach to deciphering an author’s thesis, and whether or not he completes his thesis. A well-done book review should follow the following format:
• Analyze the evidence and briefly summarize the work.
• The author’s theses that would be stated in your opening paragraph.
• A discussion of the author’s theses, which should included a list of facts, which support his/her thesis.
• Your opinion of the book. Do you agree or disagree with the author’s point of view. Do you recommend this book, if so for whom, or do you feel that the author’s to one sided in his/her opinion. What parts did you like or didn’t you like. “WHY”
Outline:
Page 1: intro and explain the main point of the novel.
Page 2: Briefly summarize the main points of the novel and use some evidence to support( quotes).
Page 3: Continue summary and analysis of the novel
Page 4: Your reaction: support or against the novel.
Was it good? Why
Was it bad? Why?
Did the author make his or her point?
Rubric:
Part I (25): This is a brief outline of the contents of the book. In the space of one or two paragraphs you should be able to convey the parameters of the book’s contents. Then, provide summaries of the chapter’s contents (which may take several paragraphs). Do not simply reproduce the book’s table of contents, and be sure to emphasize the theme and/or argument that the author is developing in each chapter.
Part II (50): Here is the place for a careful summary of the author’s thesis. The thesis is the primary idea the author is trying to prove and convince the reader to accept as valid. You must first identify the thesis and then show how the author either substantiates or fails to substantiate this thesis. You should quote portions of the book in order to answer this part of the review, and you will need to cite page numbers for these quotations. This will undoubtedly take you a page or two to do a good job.
Part III (25): This is your personal evaluation of the book, in which you describe your reaction to the book and put its contents in a comparative perspective with your textbook. Some of the questions you must answer include: Do you agree or disagree with the book’s conclusions? Why or why not? Did the book support or contradict what you read in your textbook on the same subject? (You must quote some of the relevant passages from both books, citing page numbers. Citations of page numbers at the ends of quotes and paraphrases are adequate for this — footnotes are not required.) Did you detect any biases on the part of the author? What was the author’s background, and why did he or she write the book? How in your opinion could the book have been improved? You must be specific and keep in mind there are NO perfect books. Did you enjoy reading this book? Why or why not? Would you recommend it to others?
