A. Essay: Claiming an Education by Adrienne Rich
1. What is the key point of Rich’s essay? Why is she imploring women/girls to ‘claim their education?

B. Essay: Poetry is not a luxury
1. What are Audre Lorde’s key points in this essay and why do you think she wrote the essay?

Story: Recitatif: Toni Morrison ALL MUST ANSWER THIS QUESTION:
Why does Morrison make the identity markers of the main characters indeterminate? Why does it always seem so important to us in stories to know race and class of characters? Why do these “identity markers” seem so important in literature? in life? Can we read a story just as a human story?
Then choose ONE [1] question from 1-8 to answer as well.

1. How does race and social class of each character play out in the story?
2. If this story revisions how we as readers, see race, gender, and social class: how did reading the story broaden your perspectives? [ See Dr. Wiley’s PPT]
3. From your reading of Recitatif, what do you think about Roberta and Twyla’s mothers? What did the story suggest to you?
4. How does art, fiction, poetry, film, and music, help us to think about the intersectionality of race and gender? [See Dr. Wiley’s PPT]
5. In thinking about the two main characters: Twyla and Roberta: what does the story tell you about each of their lives in terms of race and class?
6. Why was Maggie ‘labeled” by skin color, by ‘looks’, by behavior, and by voice? How do her ‘labels’ relate to Twyla and Roberta?
7. Do we need to think about these “identity markers” differently, if the individual people claim for themselves or if someone else “labels”…does the person using the “marker” matter? Whether they have white skin privilege…
8. What did you like about the story? What did you dislike? Be specific

Just relate them by saying the poem is micro-level, being by themself in the home setting which is supporting the structure of inequality, etc.
