Using 5-7 researched and peer reviewed articles/books (preferably, the same you will use for your literature review), write an annotated bibliography. This is not merely a summary of each article you have chosen, it requires critical thinking, insight and forethought.
An annotation is a summary and/or evaluation. Therefore, an annotated bibliography includes a summary and/or evaluation of each of the sources. Depending on your project or the assignment, your annotations may do one or more of the following.
Summarize: Some annotations merely summarize the source. What are the main arguments? What is the point of this book or article? What topics are covered? If someone asked what this article/book is about, what would you say? The length of your annotations will determine how detailed your summary is.
For more help, see our handout on paraphrasing (Links to an external site.) sources.
Assess: After summarizing a source, it may be helpful to evaluate it. Is it a useful source? How does it compare with other sources in your bibliography? Is the information reliable? Is this source biased or objective? What is the goal of this source?
For more help, see our handouts on evaluating resources (Links to an external site.).
Reflect: Once you’ve summarized and assessed a source, you need to ask how it fits into your research. Was this source helpful to you? How does it help you shape your argument? How can you use this source in your research project? Has it changed how you think about your topic?
You will notice that this is not a collection of quotes from the articles/books. It starts with critical thinking to get to your opinion as you summarize, assess and reflect and includes information from the source to back up your opinion. Begin each annotation with a full APA citation and these annotations should be alphabetized.
Type it, single space is okay, but make sure you add spaces BETWEEN articles so it is more easily readable. It will probably end up being around 2-4 pages in length, depending on how many articles you include and how much or how little you write. The more you explain yourself as you SUMMARIZE, ASSESS AND REFLECT (Links to an external site.) on your articles, the more helpful it will be to you.
It should look something like this:
-Full APA citation
-In your own words, summarize it. Use Purdue OWL prompts.
-Then assess it using information summarized from the article in your own words to back it up your assessment. Use Purdue OWL prompts.
-Then reflect on it using the Purdue OWL website questions.
Next APA citation in alphabetical order according to the (1st) author’s last name
-Summary
-Assess
-Reflect
