Research Paper:
Research papers are pathways to in-depth learning on a given topic.
While it is not a favorite assignment for many students, it is a great opportunity to gather
meaningful information, concepts, and ideas, create coherent arguments, and gently, even if
temporarily, stretch the horizons of a given field. It is also a great opportunity to share your
in-depth knowledge with others and for some graduate students to publish their work.
Below are a few tips to write a solid research paper. While this list is not comprehensive, I
hope it helps you to get started.
1. Big Data and Data Science is an ocean. Too much is coming at us too fast. Hence the key to
writing a successful paper is to clearly define the boundaries of your topic. A clearly defined
and well-structured topic gives you and the reader a clear signal as to what to expect and
what to include and what to exclude. This is a gift that one gives oneself and the reader when
launching any research project. So define your topic with great precision. Spend time on the
title and the abstract so that right at the start the reader knows what to expect and you, the
researcher clearly sees the path ahead.
2. Spend time on the Table of Contents. Write it down. Stare at it. Review the literature and
come back and stare at the ToC some more! Ask yourself what new knowledge or interesting
perspective you will contribute to your field and your topic. Once you have the ToC nailed,
the rest is a dance and a beautiful one at that!
3. Opinions have no place in research papers. Inferences and conclusions do. The ability to
separate the two – opinions from inferences – is key to earning the respect of leaders in the
field.
4. The brain struggles to process long paragraphs with no end in sight. Sections and subsections help the brain to better process the information. Also, a lead-in sentence or two for
each section as to what to expect helps.
5. References and bibliography are important. This is not a numbers game. I carefully review
the bibliography for currency and relevance.
6. Write and re-write. Read and re-read your final product. Your writing is a work of art. Yes,
we all make grammatical errors, but when we work on our art, it improves!
7. Double-spaced, font size 12 is recommended.
8. Finally, enjoy the journey. We never know when what we have learned comes in handy and
makes us look brilliant ;]
