English 9 Final Essay
Conflict in Lord of the Flies
Conflict, the tension between characters and forces that guides the direction of the plot, and leads to character development, is an essential element in the traditional plot structure of narrative fiction. In Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, the author makes each of the main characters face several types of conflict. How each character deals with these conflicts is at the heart of what the author is trying to communicate to his audience.
For your final essay, choose one of the main characters, Ralph, Jack, Piggy, or Simon to analyze. Write an analytical essay in which you discuss at least three types of conflict your character faces and how this develops him as a character while also pushing the plot forward. Four types of conflict we have discussed include:
Man vs. Man
Man vs. Self
Man vs. Society
Man vs. Nature
Your essay should be 5-7 paragraphs long and should contain all of the essential elements of an analytical essay: hook, introduction, thesis, body paragraphs and conclusion. You need to use at least three quotations from the book to support your analysis.
