Project Purpose
The purpose of this creative project is to give students an opportunity to impart what they’ve learned from their independent reading. (Every student was responsible for choosing one of the required non-fiction books listed on the syllabus by the third week of the semester.) We have spent most of the semester reading and writing; thus, another purpose of this project is to give students an opportunity to “think outside of the box” and communicate information in a visual and creative way.

Project Points and Grading
This project is each student’s final exam, which is worth up to 100 points. Every student is graded individually for this presentation. The 100 points are divided as follows:
• 25 points for content (the information presented: logic, topic significance, and depth)
• 25 points for organization (how content is presented in terms of its order and connection)
• 50 points for creativity (visual art, audio, and other creative elements)

A = 100-90 points; B = 89-80 points; C = 79-70 points; D = 69-60 points; F= 59-0 points

Project Due Dates
1. Your presentation is due on your class final exam, which is Thursday, June 4. This is the absolute last day your project can be uploaded to Canvas: Thursday, June 4.

Project Instructions
Working independently, you will create a presentation for the final exam, reporting on what you learned during your reading this semester.

The following is a list of project ideas. You are free to choose one or create one of your own. I simply wanted to offer a few ideas for anyone who may feel unsure of what to do on the final exam. Remember, every group member is responsible for him or herself—this is not a group project. Every student will be turning in his or her own presentation.

Here are some suggestions on what to present for the non-fiction book you chose:

Suggestion #1: “The Verbal Argument Essay”

1. Create a visual lesson in PowerPoint or some other presentation software that illustrates an argument made in your book. You may want to explore the historical, cultural, and/or geographical implications of the argument and teach at least 2 different quotes from the book that show how the author(s) support your argument.

Suggestion #2: “A Book in a Box”

2. Photograph at least 3 different items representing 3 different ideas in the non-fiction book you read. All items must be visual and tactile. Think of this as symbols for show and tell. You must explain each item’s significance to what you read. This project requires strong visuals, so be prepared to be creative and clear on the objects’ significance to what you read. The meaning of the objects must go beyond the obvious. Also, no two objects should be alike for this presentation. In other words, do not show 2 album or book covers. I want you to push yourself to find the connections between what you read and objects/symbols around you representing the book’s themes, arguments, or points.

Suggestion #3: “Put a Pin in It”

3. Create a visual board/collage using Pinterest or OneNote. The images pinned to the board will be shared and discussed in class. Explain as you move from top to bottom, how each picture “tells” the book’s “story.” This project requires strong visuals, so be prepared to be creative.

Suggestion #3: “Theme, Theme—What Does it Mean?”

4. Create a visual lesson in PowerPoint or some other presentation software about one theme from your assigned reading. Explain the theme using at least 2 different quotations from the book (must be visual) that substantiate your interpretation of the theme. Be very careful with your timing on this one! A list of some themes are below (but you may choose your own):
• Community
• Public policy
• School/education
• Work
• Technology
• War
• Freedom of speech
• Discrimination
• Law

Suggestion #4: “Sweet Lyrics for Our Ears” or “Take One!”

5. Compose music with lyrics or write a poem that teaches the significance of what you read in the non-fiction book. Explain your intentions for the song or poem and how it relates to what you read in the book.

Suggestion #5: “Take Charge”

6. If you have a different idea for your book presentation that you would find interesting and instructive, talk to Ms. Brown about it, fill out the proposal, turn it in, and execute it with panache!
No matter whether you choose one of the ideas I have suggested or choose one of your own—please remember that this is meant to be fun, to give you freedom to express yourself outside of the traditional mode of pen and paper. You have more than a month to create this project, so use your time wisely between now and finals week. I look forward to learning from all of you!
