Bill of Rights
Introduction:
Originally, the Bill of Rights applied only to the national government, and not the state governments. Therefore, states could continue to claim that they were not bound by the Bill of Rights and could continue to deny civil liberties to their citizens – until the Fourteenth Amendment which nationalized or incorporated the Bill of Rights into the states. However, the Supreme Court only gradually applied these rights via selective incorporation.
Question:
In this assignment, you will go online to research the incorporation of the Bill of Rights. Because of selective incorporation, the Bill of Rights has not been fully nationalized, however, freedom of speech, assembly, exercise of religion, press, and establishment of religion have been incorporated. Choose three of these liberties to research and write a summary on each that identifies the key cases which have led to incorporation. This assignment should be about a page in length.
