This 4-page essay must present an original critical analysis of the film of your choice. [You may write on a film you’ve reviewed and/or a film you used in other assignments (e.g. film term definition).] This must be an analytical paper, based on research, and it must argue and support a focused interpretation of an important theme in or around your chosen film. Close critical analysis of the text(s) is required (THIS MEANS QUOTES & CLOSE ANALYSIS & STILLS) and your ideas should be presented in engagement with published research.
You must use 3 secondary sources, all of which must be academic and peer-reviewed (i.e. peer-reviewed journal articles or chapters from books published by university presses). Do not use sources written by undergraduates or random people online! You may use film reviews judiciously if it helps your argument, but these do not count toward your 3 academic sources. Keep in mind that this must be your original thesis. Your paper should not be a summary of your film. Nor should your paper be a summary of your critical articles—use them, but do so judiciously, and quickly, to support a point you want to make.
As always, please feel free to make an appointment with me to look over your introductory paragraph, sources, and/or outline to make sure you are on the right track. We can talk over email or Zoom. The Writing Center is also a great resource and I encourage you to take advantage of it.
You will not be re-writing these essays for this class. Make sure the paper you submit to me is a complete and polished one, not a draft.
