HWS 298 Final Project
Due Date: Wednesday, June 3rd at 11:59pm (submit through Canvas).
Point Value: 18 points (18% of final grade)
Purpose of Lab: Provide a critical analysis and summary of a recent peer-reviewed research article. The goal is to break down the information from a research article and make it applicable to practitioners (i.e. a physical education teacher). Then review 2 key ideas that you learned this term.
This project has 2 parts. Make sure you read all of the instructions. Part 2 should be on a separate page (but can be included in the same document (just include a page break), or you can upload 2 documents.
Part 1 Instructions:
Find one peer-reviewed research article published within the last year (look for 2020/2019) that is related to the material we covered in class this term (this can be related to fitness, nutrition, supplements, weight training, cardio-respiratory endurance, etc..If you are unsure if an article fits, let me know).Make sure you pay attention to the year and date. I am not trying to make your life harder with this date restriction, I just want to make sure your summary qualifies for publication if you would like to go that route. Also, it is important to stay current with research. Make sure the article you find has traditional sections such as the introduction, methods, results, and discussion sections so that you can adequately answer each question. You should not use a “review” article for this assignment.
Make sure your paper includes an Introduction or Background section, Methods, Results, and Conclusion or Discussion. This will help you write the summary.
Write a 500-650 word (about 2 pages double spaced) summary/critique of the one article you chose.
-Your article and your write-up should be relevant to practitioners.
– Do not just summarize the article. Use your critical thinking skills to pull out the most relevant points from the article and focus on the practical information that practitioners can apply. You should also create a title for your article that is different from the title of the main article you chose.
-Your paper should be no less than 475 words!
3) Your paper/analysis must include the following headings:
o 1) What Was the Question?
o 2) What Was Done?
o 3) What Was Found?
o 4) What Does the Study Mean?
*Write in regular paper format, with each heading creating a new section
– Include an APA reference at the end of the summary and one in-text citation of your article near the beginning of the summary (see example).
– Use Times New Roman font, size 12 (double spaced)
– Use Microsoft Word or similar program
– Attach a PDF of the article that you chose
Example. Please note you do not need to format your paper in columns like the example. That is just how the journal publishes it.

If you are happy with your finished product, please let me know if you are interested in finding out how to get your work published in the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. This is a great opportunity!
Remember, you are only using one article. That is the only source you will need.

Part 2 Instructions (4 points):

Write a 200 word summary on why each suggestion is important and include at least 1 in-text citation (for each suggestion) from a quality source to provide evidence for your suggestion. You can use websites, but you CAN NOT use the book as your main resource for the topic (the book can be used if you decide to include more than 1 in-text citation for each topic). *You will need at least 2 references for this part (1 for each suggestion).
For example:
Suggestion: You should engage in at least 75 minutes of vigorous intensity exercise each week.
Summary: Evidence has shown…….(Source,year). Include at least 175 words of information here. Your summary should be no more than 300 words, and 200 is ideal. Provide evidence! Imagine you are trying to convince someone to change a behavior.
