Course Signature Assignment
Student affairs and enrollment management professionals are often called upon to prepare written documents explaining complex issues facing administrative units, proposals for new programs, or documentation of the need to continue existing programs. Since senior level administrators, faculty, or governing boards with little expertise in student affairs often read these documents, our ability to present arguments clearly, concisely, and convincingly is extremely important.
Identify two important, current, compelling (or at least interesting!), and controversial issues in student affairs or enrollment management and collect resources addressing them. You are strongly encouraged to choose one issue relevant to your functional area. Be certain that a reasonable argument supporting and opposing a position on both issues can be made.
The paper will follow the format below:
Briefly explain each issue, making clear the particular issue. The issues should be clear to the reader in the first paragraph. Being able to pose a question to which one can reasonably argue yes or no is a good indication of having focused on a particular issue and not just be swimming in a large topic.
What is the most compelling argument supporting a position on each issue?
What is the most compelling argument opposing that position on each issue?
What is your position on each issue? Make a convincing case to explain why you have taken the position for each issue.
To which functional area(s) are these issue most relevant?
What are the implications of your position on each issue for student affairs practice?
Write an 8-10 page paper formatted in APA style (including references and citations). The paper must include at least six references and at least four should be from a refereed journal. Your writing style and analytic abilities are critical in this paper. For tips on style consult Chapters 3 and 4 of the APA Manual, as well as the most recent edition of Strunk and White’s The Elements of Style.
This paper will be graded on the clarity of the issues and positions argued, strength of the arguments made, implications drawn, quality of writing (i.e., graduate-level writing that is largely free of APA, grammar, spelling, syntax, logic, organization, clarity, and style errors).
