Assignment Guidelines: Under Fire
Under Fire by Henri Barbusse is a story about the life of a soldier. It was written during
World War I and accurately portrays the impressions of a front-line soldier. While Barbusse
has been criticized on occasion for writing fiction rather than a strict accounting of what
happened to him, but book has a great deal of value in understanding life during war time.
Later books, such as All Quiet on the Western Front, borrowed heavily from Barbusse’s
writing style. For this class, the purpose of writing this paper is to go beyond the traditional
accounts of war and try to understand the soldiers’ mindset.
Writing Assignment Question
Having read Under Fire, describe the different challenges faced by the soldiers. Which of
these challenges do you think is the most difficult for soldiers to deal with? What strategies
have they employed to cope? In your answer, be sure to provide specific examples to
support your argument.
