PART I: Fundamental Concepts (20 Points)
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENT #1:
Explain (at a minimum of 1 page, with images) the concepts of dimensions and measures, focusing on the difference between them. Provide three examples to illustrate each of these concepts.
Data can be represented using different models such as the data model or conceptual model. Provide five different sets of data – each of at least three pieces of data displayed using the data model. Then, for each set of data, specify the corresponding concept using the conceptual model.
How can you ensure that your audience will understand the right message from your visualization? You can use examples and visualization to illustrate your point.
PART II: Value of Data Visualization (20 Points)
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENT #2:
The data analytics life cycle consists of six phases. It is said that data visualization can help researchers and practitioners through all these phases.
Discuss with images the value of data visualization in each of these six phases. The student is required to provide examples or facts to support his/her opinions.
PART III: Data Visualization, EDA & Tableau (20 Points)
The company A runs its business in all the US regions (East, West, Central, and South), and it has its operation in almost all the states. In the data set sales_records_1.csvPreview the document , the profit generated from the company’s business was collected over a span of 4 years: 2014 – 2017.
It is assumed that the director of the financial department wants to find out how the profit has changed during this period. It is also assumed that the student is his/her deputy director of the department. The director asked the student to use EDA( Exploratory Data Analysis) with Tableau to explore the data set and report the results to him/her.
In first thoughts, the student finds that various techniques of visualizing data, i.e., many types of charts, can be used. For example, the most frequently used methods are bar charts, line charts, and heat maps. He/she plans to use one of these techniques to explore the data.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
-The student has to select only one technique to visualize the data and clearly mention the choice in the report.
TO-DO: Using Tableau and the dataset sales_records_1.csvPreview the document
– To decide which type of charts to be used to explore the data and explain why you used this type
– To explore the total profit – combining all the categories – using Tableau with the chosen technique
– To explore the profit of each category of products using Tableau with the chosen technique
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENT #3:
– Capture the screenshots that show the charts that the student has created while visualizing the data
– Write a report with images to discuss the business insights that the student can gain from the data visualization. The report should provide the reasons to explain why the student has selected a particular technique (one among the above three) to visualize the data. The report should also include the information that the director needs.
– Upload your Tableau file
PART IV: Data Visualization, EDA & Tableau (20 Points)
Company A runs its business in all the US regions (East, West, Central, and South), and it has its operation in almost all the states. In the data set sales_records_1.csvPreview the document, in each record, the company collected data of the sold product, the sale amount, and where (which state) the products were sold.
It is assumed that the director of the accounting department wants to quickly know which region the company’s business is doing the best, i.e., in which region the company has generated the highest sales figures. He/she also wants to know which state(s) produces the best results, i.e. the strongest sales figures for the company
– To decide which type of charts to be used to explore the data
– To explore the total sales figures in each region using the chosen technique
– To explore the sales figures in each state using the chosen technique. Bonus points for adding hierarchy and use grouping techniques
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENT #4:
– Capture the screenshots that show the charts that the student has created while visualizing the data
– Write a report with images to discuss the business insights that the student can gain from the data visualization. The report should provide the reasons to explain why the student has selected a particular technique (one among the above three) to visualize the data. The report should also include the information that the director needs.
– Add the tableau file
PART V: Data Visualization, EDA & Tableau (20 Points)
Company A runs its business in all the US regions (East, West, Central, and South), and it has its operation in almost all the states. They have been doing business to serve three segments of customers: Consumer, Corporate, and Home Office. The company sold products in three categories: furniture, office supplies, and technologies. Each category is divided into several sub-categories.
In the data set sales_records_1.csvPreview the document, in each record, the company collected data of the number of the sold product(s), the sale amount, the segment of customer who bought the product(s), and all other related data
It is assumed that the SVP (Senior Vice President) of Business Strategy wants to make a decision on which segment of customer that the company should focus the most from now on, based on the sales figures that the company could generate from each segment. The higher sales figures, the more focus (and more investments) should be done. The SVP also wants to know which category of products generates the highest sales figures in each segment, and which sub-category (in each category) generates the most sales.
It is also assumed that the student is his/her Senior Assistant. The SVP asked the student to use EDA( Exploratory Data Analysis) with Tableau to explore the data set, report the results, and make the recommendations to him/her.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENT #5:
– Decide which type of charts to be used, then visualize and explore the data, and gain the business
insights from the data.
– Write a report with images to discuss the business insights that the student can gain from the data visualization. The report should provide the reasons to explain why the student has selected a particular technique (one among the above three) to visualize the data. The report should also include the recommendation(s) and all the information that the SVP needs.
– Upload your Tableau file
