Industry Report (Accounting)
Research and write a report on a specific industry or profession. This should be an industry or profession you expect to enter. Where do you see yourself working after you graduate? The report must include both secondary and primary research. You must include the following sections:
Part one is a clear and informative cover page with purpose, sender, recipient, and date of submission. (1 page)
Part two describes the industry or profession right now. You will likely draw on the BLS website as well as other industry publications or secondary sources.
Part three summarizes challenges in the industry. What is difficult about the job? What has changed or is changing? Support for this section may come from secondary or primary sources.
Part four emphasizes the writing components of the job. What kind of writing does the job include? What are the challenges of writing in the job? Support for this section may come from secondary or primary sources.
Part five is a works cited page for your secondary research. You may choose MLA, APA or Chicago methods of citation for this project. (1 page)
Logistics: The total length should include at least 6 pages of text (e.g. 1 page for the cover page, 6 pages for parts 2-5, 1 page for the works cited for a total of 8 pages), and it may be longer.
You should include at least 6 sources, one of which must be original (primary) research from an interview, focus group or survey.
Hints and Process:
Choosing a topic: Don’t get hung up choosing a topic—it doesn’t have to be your exact major, just something that you will be interested in.
Make sure it’s a career, rather than a trade or job. You also might want to choose your topic based on your potential primary research. For example, if your uncle is a hospital administrator, he may be able to give you an interview.
Secondary research: Make use of UHCL library resources, including Ask a Librarian and actually looking at books in the library. You can also talk with the Career Center about resources they might have on some specific industries and professions.
Primary research: Set a deadline for your interview or survey—you’ll want to administer it as quickly after you establish your script or survey. Make sure your participants are available in time.
