Literary Analysis
Instructions: Find a work of literature that you find interesting. This could be a poem, short story, novel, epic, etc. You can use any of the works that we have used this semester or one of your choosing. Make sure that you have NOT written about your chosen text before. Once you read through your chosen text, write a content analysis where you:
Discuss the form and genre of the text (and period if relevant) you have chosen and why you wanted to focus on this type of text [Example: American novel in the 1950s, focusing on the experience of black Americans]
Summarize your chosen text [Example: Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man]
Discuss the theme you have chosen to focus on [Example: civil rights in the 1950s]
Briefly discuss a theoretical lens that might help you understand the work of literature better [Example: critical race theory, focusing on the work of Henry Louis Gates Jr.]
Discuss previous work relevant to your analysis [Example: Ellison’s Invisible Man, A Critical Essay, by Thomas, J.D.
Analyze the text using examples [Example, if the argument is that, according to the book, black identity is ignored and people of color are forced to live in the margins of society as outcasts and criminals and that they are disenfranchised until they have nothing left to do but fight back against the power structure, then I would use as evidence lines from the last 2 chapters where the conflict ramps up] This would take 3 – 5 paragraphs
