One common theme throughout Kingsnorth’s book is his belief that our stories, narratives, literature, and poetry have the power to “save the world,” so to speak. The essay “The Poet and the Machine” focuses on the common theme that we’ve seen throughout the collection: literature (specifically, poetry) can save the world against “the machine.” For this first major assignment, then, we are going to analyze a film to explore how environmentalism is represented to audiences.

For this essay, you will select a film, which you think echoes some of K’s thinking and relate what you see as similar and of value between the film and K.

In order to have enough to say you will need to identify two arguments that the film makes that seems relevant to Kingsnorth’s writings. If you are having trouble finding what to write about remember the book’s discussion of contemporary issues related to environmentalism, ecology, and/or sustainability. Consider the 5 Es: Environment, Economics, Ethics, Explorer, and Excess.

Understanding the literary analysis. This assignment should be

a minimum of 6 pages,
use MLA formatting,
and use only the sources of the K text and the movie. You may also use the script of the movie, but no other outside sources.
As you develop and organize your analysis, consider the following suggestions:

In regard to your introduction, your introduction should
Open up the conversation by summarizing the film and the major plot points for your unfamiliar reader.
Include background information regarding the cultural significance and/or box office popularity of the film.
Present a thesis statement that outlines two main arguments that you’re going to discuss in the analysis that follows.
In regard to the two discussion sections, your analysis should
Outline two main points that the film makes in regard to ecological sustainability. If you’re struggling to identify an argument from the film, consider the 5 Es: Environment, Economics, Ethics, Explorer, and Excess.
Provide specific analyses that move from general-to-specific.
Include specific scenes and quotes from the film to support each point.
Connect your analysis back to the Kingsnorth text.
In regard to the conclusion, your paper’s conclusion should
Bring the discussion to a close by, perhaps, identifying further research or analysis, making suggestions for future action, or connecting the film to contemporary concerns or challenges.
