The art of nursing: What comes to mind!
In my opinion, when we talk about the art of nursing, so many things came to my mind. To be a competent nurse is to be an artful nurse. Imagine nursing as more than a set of tasks and instead as a way of seeing, feeling, and knowing. Nurses are trained to recognize meaning inpatient situations and act with and on behalf of their patients. Nursing care promotes patient autonomy. For example: during this COVID 19 pandemic, we as nurses were able to facetime the patient family members for no visitors were allowed in the hospital. I can be a nurse’s ability to develop a relationship with a patient or their family and to build mutual trust. It can be the ability to understand what a patient is going through empathetically and to explain conditions and treatments in a way they will comprehend (Smith, 2020).
According to a patient’s needs at the moment, the art of nursing is our perception of patients’ needs to be based on their expressed behaviors. The art of nursing highlighting the focus is on how the experiences feel and what they mean. The knowledge helps nurses connect with patients during care and is entirely reliant upon being genuine, attentive, and immersed at the moment with patients—what some call being in true presence. It requires nurses to practice the skill of active listening and encourage communication that draws attention to patient, family, and community values (Smith, 2020).
Every day, nurses are faced with the challenge of making a difference, in the midst of technological advances that limit physical contact, increasing patient acuity, higher patient loads, and diminished staffing. It’s easy to become caught up in the practical tasks of our work. Just as all staff understands that everyone who comes into the hospital likes to feel better and pampered, nurses understand that regardless of a person’s health, everyone desires a high quality of life. While individual views may vary regarding what’s a “good” quality of life, a few constants are universal: peace of mind, a comfortable environment, and a sense of accomplishment. As nurses, we help patients adapt to changes in health by artistically applying our science Chinn & Kramer, 2015).
According to chapter 15, Parse’s Theory of Human becoming is focused on the quality of life. Rosemarie Parse’s Theory of Human becoming is a theory that many nurses utilize in practice daily. It is a grand theory that focuses on life and human dignity, e.g., the patient at the end of life stages. Theory of human becoming focuses on the human quality of life, e.g., a patient in hospice care meets with social workers to consider the quality of life this patient will endure, including the holistic Nursing team as my hospital, offered these services on the oncology unit. It has three major themes or principles being meaning, rhythmicity, and transcendent. Dr. Parse studied many philosophers when she was creating her theory and also was greatly influenced by Martha E. Rogers, a nursing theorist who developed the Theory of Unitary Human Beings that was published in 1970 ( Parse, 2017)
Parse believes the true presence includes coming-to-be-present by being gracefully present with your patient and being attentive. You embrace the moment given to you to immerse and have a genuine conversation with the patient. The nurse listens not just hears the patient without interrupting. She believes face-to-face conversations are an opportunity to initiate discussion and engage in dialogue. The nurse should restate or make clarifications for validation of listening (Smith, 2020)
