All Essays must have a cover page that contains your name, HIST 3005,
Summer2 2020, and the date of submission. Please use a standard font.
Please use Chicago style. Each essay should be three to five pages, including Works Cited page.
Your essay will be an analysis of the most recent FEMA Strategic
Plan (2018-2022) found here: FEMA Strategic Plan, 2018-2022 . Use one of
the case studies from Reilly to assess the relevance of the FEMA Plan.
One of the most important claims of history is that we should learn from the
past to plan for today and the future. Does the FEMA Plan do that? Or is this just
another exercise in expanding the bureaucracy to meet the needs of the expanding
bureaucracy?
Analytical essays emphasize creating and exploring common themes,
comparing and contrasting different time periods and cultures, and using specific
facts to support your perspective. You should begin by formulating a good thesis,
and prove it with specific evidence from the relevant material from the course,
including specific references to both Reilly case studies and the FEMA Strategic
Plan. Your essay should be well-organized, and should be three to five pages in
length. A major purpose of this exercise is to write a well-thought-out composition,
so advance preparation is critical to your success. Essays are evaluated based on a
combination of accurate and relevant data along with effective explanation and
written presentation. Quantity of information you provide is not as crucial as a
quality essay with a clear argument, supported by concise and relevant
explanations and evidence.
For the Final Essay, you must use a minimum of six (6) specific
references and citations total from Reilly case studies (3 specific
references) and FEMA Strategic Plan (3 specific references) to support
your explanations and arguments. You are not required to do any further
research, but you may if you choose. No textbooks, popular sources, or non-academic
journals (Time). You may use relevant academic resources, such as academic
databases (Academic Search Complete, WorldCat, NetLibrary), available through
the LSUA Library. You must use appropriate citations to support your essay
(remember to use the appropriate Chicago style). Quotations may be used
judiciously and correctly, but in a very limited and most relevant way. All Final
Essays will be graded according to the Final Essay Grading Rubric (see below).
