Orleans is a novel that fits into the genre of dystopian fiction:
Dystopian fiction shows readers a vision of the future. Dystopias are societies in decline, with characters who must deal with environmental ruin, technological control, and government oppression. Dystopian novels can challenge readers to think differently about social and political issues in the real world, and in some instances can even inspire action to work toward change.
The point of dystopian fiction is to show us what could happen in the near future if we don’t solve problems happening now. In the first nine chapters of Orleans, we meet two potential problem solvers, Fen and Daniel. Write a paragraph about each of these two characters. Describe them: what does the novel tell us about them and what can we infer, or hypothesize, about them based on what we’re told?
