I attached a copy of the rubric as well.
Format: Type double-spaced in Chicago Manual of Style/Turabian format. If you are not familiar with this format, it is available under the “Research Assignment” heading in Canvas or you can access it by using the Chicago Manual of Style/Turabian (Links to an external site.) online. Remember that you’ll need to cite not only direct quotes, but also ideas/facts you get from the book that are not general knowledge. Include a Bibliography page, which will contain a single entry, the Jeremiah book.
Length: 900-1000 words (body of the essay) Note: I will only grade the first 1000 words.
Font: A standard 12 font such as Ariel or New Times Roman
Save your essay as a file in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx), Portable Document Format (.pdf), or Rich Text Format (.rtf) and turn it in to the appropriate Canvas assignment item. (Be sure to include your last name as part of your file name.) Here is your prompt:
This is a two part essay. In Part I, describe the circumstances leading to Thomas Jeremiah’s arrest, addressing the following questions. Why were slave-owners like Henry Laurens determined to preserve the institution of slavery? Why did slave-owners feel that the colonies’ revolution from Britain represented a threat to the institution of slavery? Why, specifically, did Jeremiah pose a threat? Support your assertions with specific examples from the book. In Part II, discuss the evidence for and against Jeremiah’s guilt. In your opinion, was he guilty? Why/why not?
Start your essay with a short introductory paragraph, then organize it per the elements in the rubric below. Note that the two parts of the essay are NOT weighted equally. Do NOT include a conclusion, as Part II will serve as your conclusion.
