The Reflection supports your understanding and analysis of the concepts, theories, and actors/institutions covered in modules 1 and 2 of the course. It helps you connect these ideas with your own experiences and enables you to express your own opinions about Development Studies.
Go back to the response you made in week 1 to the question ‘How do you understand development?’. After that, review and think about the course materials and the discussions from modules 1 and 2 (weeks 1-6). Based on this, answer these questions:
How did you present your understanding of development in the week 1 discussion forum?
Has your understanding of development and Development Studies/International Development changed since that week 1 post? Why/why not? How has it changed (if applicable)?
Which of the discussions/course materials have been most helpful/thought provoking/challenging to you in your learning journey? Why? Give at least two examples.
How have your personal experiences (e.g. your course major, your political views, your family background, things you’ve done) impacted/influenced the way you are approaching this course? Give one example.
Your responses to these questions are what you should write/record/present in your Reflection.
It is up to you to decide how to present your Reflection. All creative formats that enable you to meet the objectives and ‘what do I need to do’ are welcome. It needs to be in a format that can be uploaded in Quercus (text entry, website URL, media recordings, file upload). Examples may include: written in a document, audio or video recording, presentation, poster, infographic, collage…
As a guide, if you were to type it, the Reflection should be a maximum of 2 pages double spaced or 500 words. If you were to record it, the Reflection should be two to three minutes long.
You should feel comfortable using the first person and putting forward your own views. You will not be graded on spelling/grammar etc.
Read the UTSC Reflection PaperLinks to an external site. guide for more information about this kind of assignment. Bear in mind that this is based on a written document so might not be totally applicable to the format you choose.
Your Reflection should be uploaded to Quercus in the Assignments section.
The Reflection is based on your own ideas and draws from your personal experiences. As such, the assessment considers each of the following criteria in equal measures (up to 10 points each for a maximum of 20):
1. Application and connections: How well you make connections within and between various topics and your personal context.
2.Critical thinking and communication: The extent to which you apply critical thinking, the relevance of these critical points, how well you organize and communicate your thoughts.
