Social Movement: Actors

Black Lives Matter is a social movement introduce in 2013 to fight for freedom, justice, and liberty of African American population. The starting of this social movement was inspired by the murder of the 17-year-old Trayvon Martin’s in 2013. The major actors in this social movement are Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi.

Combo Analysis:

BLM is the modern day reflection of the civil rights movement as many agrees on. The Civil Rights movement was also a social movement which took place from the mid 1950’s to late 1960’s. The movement’s goal was to end racial segregation and discrimination against African-American people along with securing federal citizenship rights. Black Lives Matter (BLM) is the other hand is an international activist movement now, originating in the African-American community that campaigns against violence toward African-Americans. These movements fight the same issues. The inequality and inequity against African Americans.

Inequity can be defined as unfairness or injustice. Inequality is also defined as lack of justice or an imbalance. I believe inequality is the result of inequity. BLM is fighting both issues. They are standing for the African Americans facing unfairness an imbalanced justice system in their everyday lives.

Historic Roots :

As mentioned above, BLM is the present-day Reflection of the civil rights movement.

When we navigate through the back history on these movements, In the 1950’s and 1960’s African-American civil right activist participated on many nonviolent protests to make sure the discrimination, inequities, and inequalities towards them. As citizens their fight was to secure their civil rights that the constitution gave them. But Almost all civil rights movements protests were met with the violence of Police. For example, 1963 in Birmingham the youth march called “We Shall Overcome” ended with kids being arrested until the jails were overwhelmed and were also met the next day by firefighters turning hi-pressure hose on the young nonviolent protesters. The reason for all violence was just a simple request of their rights as a citizen of the nation like everybody else.

This is also what BLM stands for. Both movements aimed to achieve political change and equality. As we experienced in our time too this injustice brought many to the streets to protest against the brutality of police against African-American . On May 25th following the murder of George Floyd is one of the most recent protests lead by this group. The question is why not treat all citizens the same isn’t that taking the minorities right? many from the civil right movement sacrificed their lives to make our nation better for everyone and BLM has been fighting until today.
