Explanation of issue:
student will be able to identify and clarify problems, questions, and issues (20pts)Break the question down into parts:What were the causes of the Civil War? Provide at least 2-3 causes.
Consider issues like slavery, secession, modernization and industrialization. What were the goals of Reconstruction?Provide at least 2-3 goals. Consider the different plans for Reconstruction. Lincoln had a plan as did the Radical Republicans. What were some of those goals? And then, what actual Reconstruction plan was implemented? Was Reconstruction successful? Consider that this answer may not be simple. It could be seen as successful by some and unsuccessful to others. A good way to address this part would be to explain why it was a success to some and a failure to others.

Students must provide content from the reading to support their answers. Outside sources can be used for the assignment; however, a works cited page needs to be provided. Citations need to be placed in quotes if it is a direct quotation from the reading. If the content is paraphrased, a citation at the end of the sentence is still required as it denotes information that the student obtained from the reading. Citations/references to the reading are required for the section of the rubric. Students should be able to provide at least 4-5 references to the reading within the content of their paper. Failure to do so will result in a substantial deduction of points.

Influence of context and assumptions: students will draw well-reasoned, logically supported conclusions from information. (20pts)When looking at the power points and reading, what is your conclusion from the reading? In answering the essay question, the content provided in addition to the references/citations will impact a students’ score here.

Student’s position (perspective, thesis): student will state specific position and acknowledges different sides of an issue. (15pts)What is the student’s thesis? This statement needs to be made in the introduction of the paper and should clarify the writer’s position on the issue. The thesis statement should address all parts to the writing assignment question. Additionally, the writer should allude to the causes of the Civil War and goals of Reconstruction and also imply whether it was successful or unsuccessful. Conclusions: student will draw well-reasoned, logically supported conclusions from information. (20pts)

A conclusion paragraph should be added to summarize the main points that the writer has made in their paper. It should also emphasize the writer’s main arguments.

This is a history paper, so it needs to be written in past tense. Also, avoid first person point of view. Only use third person point of view.
