The goal of this assignment is to provide you a space to apply your sociological imagination and reflect on your own life history while applying concepts and theories that we have learned in the class thus far. You will be graded on your ability to apply sociological concepts to your own life experiences and explain those connections thoughtfully. No outside research is required for this assignment, it is entirely a personal reflection assignment. Some of the concepts that we have discussed thus far that you could consider include:
• power
• class
• inequality
• values
• morals
• social norms
• urbanization
• industrialization
• alienation
• anomie
• agency
• Conflict theory
• Symbolic Interactionist Theory
• Structural Functionalist Theory
• or any other term or definition brought up in politics, family, religion, education, health and medicine, etc, could/should be applied.
The task: you are required to write a 3 page (double spaced) autobiography where you critically analyze experiences in your own life from a sociological perspective. Sociological perspectives will consider a wide variety of various external social factors that have influenced your life in a profound way. Discuss any relevant topics from your past, and use sociological concepts to analyze your life, where you are today, how you got to that place, why you are here, what factors have contributed to that, and even challenges that you have faced. Discuss anything that you feel is relevant to this autobiography; it could be one single experience, one story, or a summary of many experiences or years of your life. You will be marked on the use of sociological concepts and how you can connect your own life experiences to the material in this course and show your mastery of the course content. I don’t want to simply see concepts and terms being dropped into your narrative, I want to see terms and concepts explained and broken down in a way that displays your understanding and mastery of these topics. This is meant to be a fun writing exercise that grounds our academic inquiry in the real world, indeed in our very personal individual life experiences. Please try to have some fun with it!
