Length: approximately 8 pages (not including title page and reference).

Data Collection: Given the short amount of time that you have to write this paper, I have collected the data for you.

Write a brief research paper based upon the data that I already collected. The study looks at the relationship between the stereotypes that White people think others hold of their racial group (meta-stereotypes) and the degree to which they perceive Blacks, Whites and Black/White biracials as racial ingroup members (group membership).

Some keywords to search for are: meta-stereotypes, hypodescent, and categorization of biracials

The main hypotheses are that there will be a negative correlation between meta-stereotypes and group membership when Whites are asked to think about either Blacks or Black-White biracials, but no correlation between those meta-stereotypes and group membership when they are asked to think about Whites.

Formatting: All parts of your manuscript should be double-spaced with 1” margins on every side. You also need to use the header option on your word processor to give your manuscript a Running Head and page numbers in the upper right (see p. 169 for an example).

You will be primarily graded on the clarity of your writing and your ability to adhere to APA style.

Formatting: The paper must be in APA format. See Appendix A in the textbook for an example of an APA style paper. All parts of your manuscript should be double-spaced with 1” margins on every side. The font should be 12pt Times New Roman. You also need to use the header option on your word processor to give your manuscript a running head and page numbers (see p. 169 for an example).

Paper Section Requirements

Title Page: Include title, your name, and institution. You do not need to include the running head or the author note.

Abstract: Provide a short summary and key words on a separate page. (YOU DON’T NEED AN ABSTRACT FOR PAPER 1)

Introduction: This should be brief, about 3-6 paragraphs. The introduction should:

Introduce the research question or problem (also known as a thesis). This should happen in the first paragraph.

Review the relevant research on the topic (that is support your thesis). This should happen in the main body paragraphs. Each main body paragraph should have one (and only one) main point. There are multiple common types of main points used in psychology papers: 1) defining an important topic, 2) showing how a psychological phenomenon can affect people, 3) showing how a psychological phenomenon operates, 4) describing an important methodology, 5) comparing or contrasting different phenomena or theories, and 6) describing ideas that still need to be researched.

Importantly, each main point should help support your thesis. Tell your reader why this research project is justified, needed, and important. You must make a logical argument to demonstrate why this is true. Each main point should flow logically from the last one.

Each main must also be supported by empirical research. For this paper you must find at least four peer-reviewed journal articles and use them in your introduction to support your argument. Do not just tell your reader something; demonstrate it by citing other scientific work.

State your hypotheses and explain why they make sense given the literature you reviewed earlier (this should be in the last paragraph). Your introduction should be an argument as to why your topic is important and your hypothesis makes logical sense given past research. Summarize that argument here and present your hypothesis.

The introduction will account for most of your grade on this paper. I will grade you on the content and quality of your writing. The writing should show a good understanding of the peer-reviewed articles. The writing should also be clear, concise, and informative. Make sure to proofread and follow instructions. I strongly suggest you see the writing center.

Method: You should use subheadings (participants, materials, and procedure) even though they will be very brief.

Results: You need to report 3 correlations total. I will discuss these correlations when we get to the correlation lecture.

Discussion: In 4-6 paragraphs briefly discuss 1) whether or not the results support your hypothesis and why they did or did not support your hypotheses, 2) their implications 3) any limitations or alternative explanations for these findings, and 4) future directions to study.

References: This should be a separate page and should have at least four references (a good paper will have 10 or more references).

You do not need to include anything not listed above. There is no need for an abstract, author’s note, footnotes, table or figures. You’ll also note we did you a favor and listed the components your paper should have in the order they should appear.
