Research Proposal First Draft Assignment Guidelines
The research proposal draft will be evaluated using the following criteria (110 points total)
Title Page (2 points)
You should include a title page with APA style running head and pagination; as well as a title, name, institution, and class.
(1 page)
Abstract (6 points; separate page)
The abstract should be a single paragraph, between 150-250 words, summarizing key points of your research proposal from each content area described below.
(1 page)
Introduction (28 points; 3-5 pages)**
In the introduction section, you should present the topic of the research proposal and any relevant research questions. You are to conduct a brief review of the literature (9 points), summarizing 7-9 relevant research articles (from peer-reviewed journals). Make sure you integrate the articles and discuss the pattern(s) of findings. Provide your rationale for this research project (5 points). In other words, why is it important to study this topic? How does it add to the research literature? Finally, present your hypothesis/hypotheses (7 points). What would you expect to find if you were to conduct the study? You will also be graded on the organization of your introduction (7 points). You can follow the ordering of content noted in this description. Be sure to transition the reader into each new topic. You can use APA style headings to help clearly organize each section.
Methods (18 points)
You should provide a clear description of methods and procedures (10 points total), including: participants (who they will be; how many there will be; where you plan to recruit from); groups/conditions (if applicable: how many groups; how will you be assigning participants to conditions; how the groups differ); materials (brief description of materials you will be using); procedure; and design (describe whether your study is correlational, within-subjects, or between subjects). You should describe your procedure in a way that the reader has all the necessary information to replicate the study from when participants walk in, to when they leave. You will be graded on the extent to which your design is creative or novel, so please try your best not to significantly replicate existing work (4 points). You will also be graded on how well you organize this information, so it is recommended that you follow the format described in this section and utilize APA style headings (4 points).
(1-2 pages)
Results (16 points)
In the results section, you should restate each of your hypotheses from your introduction section (6 points). For each hypothesis, you must provide potential statistical tests (data analysis) that you would plan to use to test the hypothesis (10 points). For example, if you are designing a correlational design with two continuous variables, you would use a Pearson’s r to assess the strength and direction of the relationship. We will discuss different designs and corresponding statistics during the semester. Please be assured, there will be time in lab to consult one-on-one with your TA about specific analyses for your proposal.
(1 page)
Discussion (30 points; 2-3 pages)
In this section, you will more broadly restate the goals and predictions of your study (6 points) and interpret potential data and the implications (10 points). More specifically, you want to discuss what it would mean if your hypotheses were supported, as well as if they were not supported. This will lead you into limitations (4 points) of your study design and future research (4 points) that could improve upon limitations or gather more information about the effect(s) of interest. You will also be graded on the organization of your discussion (6 points).
APA format reference section and citations (6 points) | Writing clarity, organization, and grammar (4 points)
You should have a reference section that is properly formatted with correct APA citations. All references should be cited correctly in text (6 points). You will be more generally graded on your writing style (clarity of writing) and using correct APA format (i.e., headings, presentation of statistics; 4 points).
