Inner city revitalization has been an important area of concern for urban planners and economic development professionals. After reading Porter (1995) and watching the 5 Blocks documentary film, discuss common social and economic problems observed in inner cities and how they can be addressed.

A member of the Sociology Department at the University of Chicago, Burgess (1925), developed an influential theory of how cities are spatially organized. He conceptualized the spatial organization of cities (at least Chicago in the 1920s) in concentric zones. Zone 1: Central Business District, Zone 2: Areas of Transition and so on. After reading Burgess (1925) reflect on the city of San Francisco or another city that you are familiar with and explain whether or not the zones in the Concentric Zone Theory help explain the spatial structure of that city today.
