Find a peer reviewed research article on your subject, that is of interest to you. Make sure that it is a single study (not a meta-analyses or review article). You need an original research paper, in which they have an Introduction in which they provide the basis their research questions/hypotheses, a section in which they discuss their Methods (who were the participants, how they collected data, etc.), the Results, in which they show the statistics that they used to analyze the data (and while you don’t necessarily need to understand these procedures if the discussion is well written and summarizes the findings in a comprehensive manner), and a Discussion, in which they discuss the significance of their findings. Try to find one that is easily understood – many articles are written for experts in the field, and use terminology that is hard to understand.
As I will be reading your articles, if you use an article that is not available by using the full text option through the Buley Library, you need to provide me with a copy of your source.
II. You are not limited to these questions, if you have other observations, but these should be answered in this element.
1. What was the research question? Why would this be an important question to ask in regards to your topic?
2. How did the researchers go about answering this question?
A. Briefly identify what type of study was it (experimental, correlational, etc.) – you will get in more detail about this later.
B. Detail such as how many subjects were used, any interesting characteristics about the subjects, such as age, gender, demographics, etc.
C. What variables were studied? How were they measured? How do they relate to an important emotional or social development topic (the one you have chosen)? Do you feel that the way these concepts were measured were valid and accurate (for example, is measuring self-esteem with a short self-report questionnaire valid and reliable?). Describe this topic in as much depth as possible (you may use your text or other source in answering this question).
D. What methods were used? Were subjects followed over time? Were they only contacted once?
E.
1. What types of interventions were used and how did the researchers determined whether an intervention was successful or not? This applies to experimental studies.
OR
2. If an intervention was not used, describe how the variables were related, and what the outcomes occurred. This applies to non-experimental studies.
3. What implications do the results have for the ‘real world’? Can you think of any ways that the researchers could have improved their study?
