Choose something which interests you and which has a strong visual element. Sometimes students will choose a topic for which they provide no visuals, neither photography, nor film, printmaking, painting, animation and so on, nor any element of visual interpretation. That weakens the submission, obviously, so not a good plan. I think you are in Graphics, not sure. What I have found is that often Graphics students, but the same happens with Fashion, students have the assumption that they can produce a “How to” type project. Namely, a mini-handbook in which they explain to me what a successful advertising campaign looks like or successful branding and, literally, how it was done, and what the books say about technique. This is off the mark. For this project, instead, you are supposed to find an issue, a problem which you are going to research. Having chosen a topic with a strong visual element, think about what it is about the topic that you find particularly interesting. Why do you think it is worth pursuing? Which aspects do you wish to develop? What have you read already? What basis of information are you relying on at this stage? Next steps. As you missed the tutorials available, you will have to work on your own. What to do next? I suggest that you write a Research Proposal, also called a Feasibility Study. What makes your proposal convincing? On what basis is it worth pursuing? The Proposal should convince you first of all. Imagine someone else wrote it and that you are the person deciding if it is any good. If, it fits the brief and stated requirements. Does it? What makes you think it is a good Proposal? What elements do you have? A good Proposal relies on and builds on some preliminary research, involving possibly a couple of chapters from books and some articles. The authors share some ideas or disagree. Where does Ciaran fit in? What has already been discovered/ What has already been said? A strong Proposal is based on some good quality reading, not anonymous websites, obviously, but online articles and book chapters on your topic. Consequently, having done this preliminary work, you are not going to simply tell me everything you can find out on a specific topic; adding up to plain facts and figures, raw information, woven into a narrative. Because work of this kind does not add up to a dissertation/extended essay. All it conveys is a collection of data and, possibly, some opinions about a topic. You need a real question. So how can you meet the requirements of the brief? How are you going to develop your ideas for a dissertation? Having researched and typed up your Proposal, you will now develop it. To do so, you must establish a point of view. In other words, you need to pose a question, a problem, which your research is going to try and tackle. This will form the basis of your dissertation structure. Defining the topic area. (What my dissertation is about). Posing a specific question. What does current scholarship say about your question? Find out. Familiarize yourself with what experts have written about it. Can you do that? Look it up in Discover! The … online e-library. Your plan. Communicating your plan as to how you are going to tackle your question. I shall first… then I am going to.. and finally… to see if.. and how… Divide your Dissertation into 4 numbered Parts. (Part One: Introduction. Part Two: the ideas behind your topic, your toolbox. Part Three: application, proceeding from the general ideas to specific artworks and artists. Best to limit yourself to one or two. Or else it can become very vague. Part Four: Conclusion. What did you prove? What did you find out? What is, in the final analysis, your genuine conclusion? As you can appreciate, a second year style essay does not go this far. It tends to be only about a topic, illustrated, and including a commentary, an interpretation of an artwork or two. OK. So you have a structure, which will help you to establish your plan. Now, you need to find an angle, a point of view. A real question. What is it you are trying to achieve (other than writing a narrative, a compilation, a list of facts and ideas with no whys or wherefores, no point). How do I do his? You begin to read the literature. This, often creates a sense of hesitation in reading the right kind of material, the usual problem. Your theme, your topic. The artworks. What strikes you about a specific artwork? What is the theme? What are the themes? What is intriguing? Unusual? Strange? Original? What is it that do you like? Admire? Dislike? And why? So far, this line of questioning is only based on your impressions. So, you write them down. YOUR impressions. OK. Next step. 2. What do other people, the experts, think of these photographs? Why are they important in contemporary art history? To go on to this second step, you will need to go to Discover and look for articles, by critics, on your topic. You will need to read these articles, patiently and carefully. As you do this, I suggest that you take notes and mark the page numbers of where exactly the ideas, facts, opinions expressed are to be found. By the end of reading one article, you will write down what you understand, what is the main issue the critic is writing about. Then on to the next article. Same process. This way, you will now have TWO SETS of ideas and impressions. Yours, and those of the experts, some of the experts. This type of work should be recorded in your Notebook. I need to see it, as well as your Dissertation. The Notebook is also assessed. Read these instructions carefully, and dive in! You will be confused for as long as you do not get into good quality reading. Make the effort, and you will find it is all much easier than you would imagine. So, the first thing to do is to look up key words in Discover!, the LIT research hub that gives you access to a huge e-library of downloadable academic articles and books. Under “Find”, you have to possibilities. Try both, please. One is Discover! the … hub for academic articles on art, design, and every other conceivable subject. The other is e-books. Sometimes, I find a chapter or two in a book, providing, say, a survey. This might be just what you need to give the context of your research.
