Please respond to the prompts below. Your reflection must be a minimum of 250 words (can certainly be more) and should demonstrate critical reflection on the assigned reading, viewing, and in-class discussions. This reflection is due Tuesday at 9:00 pm. Reflections are always due Tuesday at 9pm.
• I’m curious to know about two new things you learned from your reading assignment or lectures this week. What specifically do you find interesting or exciting about this material and the way you might use this new knowledge going forward? What questions do you now have that you didn’t have before you learned this information?
• What are your thoughts about Good Will Hunting? What do you notice about the screenwriting? The story structure? The characters? The setting? The dialogue? The plot? What works and what doesn’t in your view, and why? Please identify three or four of the major beats in the film. Can you identify the catalyst? What sets the story into motion? What happens at the midpoint? What is the All Is Lost beat? Feel free to choose any three or four beats you’d like. I’m curious to see your ideas!
• Let’s talk titles. What have you read or heard about and thought to yourself, “That could be a movie!” What about titles come to mind? Please share your ideas for a few titles that might draw some attention.
• Finally, please tell me what you found most interesting or helpful from our class discussion last week. (Note: This prompt is mandatory.)
Before you submit your reflection, please review the rubric that I will use to score your reflection/response. Remember that you will receive one grade for both your written reflection and your in-class discussion each week, and you must have both (written reflection and in-class discussion) to receive a grade. Each week’s reflection/discussion is worth 2% of your overall grade. In other words, review the rubric, and please take these reflections/discussions seriously. I am looking for thoughtful commentary that demonstrates CRITICAL thinking and reflection.
I’m looking forward to reading your first reflection!
A NOTE ABOUT HOW TO REFLECT!
As you consider your reflection, refer to the Bloom’s Taxonomy graphic of high-order thinking skills (below). This should help you think about responding critically to the course material. I’m looking for you to engage in a thoughtful reflection about the topic. Please try to respond in the Level 2-5 range.
How can you demonstrate that you understand the material and are thinking about it critically, applying it to your own life, to other films you’ve seen, or to the world at large? As you think critically about and analyze your classmates’ comments from class, can you compare their thoughts to something you have read or seen or discussed with another friend or classmate or family member? Can you take a stance or make an argument and support that argument with original ideas?
Posts are due by 9:00pm on Tuesday.
